Rights Institutions: Withdraw Egyptian Draft NGO Law

International and Danish organisations are deeply worried about the possible effects of a draft law that, if passed, would seriously obstruct national and international NGOs’ work in Egypt.
 
The draft law will enable the state to interfere with Egyptian NGOs’ internal affairs such as appointment of board members. International NGOs will not be allowed to work in Egypt if they receive funding from foreign governments.
 
The European-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) follows up on the meeting between the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton and the Egyptian President Mursi, urgently appealing for withdrawal of the draft law.
 
In Denmark, KVINFO and 15 other civil society actors working in Egypt have signed a letter urging the Minister of Foreign Affairs to put pressure on the Egyptian President and Government to skip the law.

Egyptian women are growing increasingly angry and militant as they deal with one of the unintended consequences of the Arab Spring: An epidemic of sexual assault that law enforcement has failed to contain.
