Gender equality and women’s economic participation in Jordan

Although the level of education of Jordanian women is at a par with that of Jordanian men, the level of women’s economic participation in society is the lowest within the Middle East. If this disparity can be rectified, Jordan’s development, particularly its economic development, could be strengthened significantly. ‘Engendering the Public Sphere’ aims to support this goal, based on the fact that only by giving women equal rights and equal access to political and economic decision making processes can Jordan achieve economic growth and welfare for all levels of society.  

Jordanian-Danish joint partnership 

The project is partnership between The Jordanian National Commission for Women  (JNCW) and KVINFO. It supports the Jordanian Ministry of Labour in its efforts to increase the number of women employees and also to develop their competencies. Additionally support comes from The Jordanian Ministry of Planning and Cooperation’s gender division  in highlighting women’s economic and political participation as a focus area. The Danish Gender Equality Ministry  is a project partner and will provide consultation and training to the Jordanian Ministry of Planning and to other gender-equality consultants in public institutions in Jordan. 

Increasing women in the labour market 

Nuqul Group , one of the largest corporate conglomerates in Jordan, and the Danish global biotech company Novo Nordisk are also project partners. Both work with engaging women in the labour force and increasing the number of women in management. The two companies contribute to the projects objectives by organising work experience programmes, workshops and mutual visits. Nuqul Group is furthermore organizing activities for HR managers in Jordan, to share the knowledge they have gained from the partnership with Novo Nordisk.
