Strengthening Women’s Economic Participation and Leadership in Jordan

Description

The in goal on a longer term is to strengthen women's economic participation and leadership. The project is a cooperation between KVINFO, Jordanian National Commission for Women, Jordanian Women’s Union, Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Department of Statistics, Business Development Center, Nuqul Group, Statistics Denmark and several Jordanian and Danish Companies.

About Strengthening Women’s Economic Participation and Leadership in Jordan

Women’s economical participation

The achievements of Jordan regarding women’s living conditions in general have improved over the last decades. Especially in the field of education, progress has been substantial and Jordan ensures a high level of gender parity in access to basic services, obtaining in fact, a longer course of education expectancy for women than for men. Despite this, the rate of female labour force participation is significantly low in Jordan. In 2008 women made up only 14.7% (2010 figures) of the labour force in the country.

Overall objectives of the project

In order to meet the challenges combined with the strengthening of women’s access to and participation in the Jordanian labour market the project has the following overall objectives:

  • To increase the employability of women and to improve the working environments for women as well as women’s opportunities to advance to leading positions

  • To secure that national plans and legislation are gender mainstreamed in order to ensure that Jordanian women benefit equally with Jordanian men

  • To increase the relevant stakeholders' capacity of using statistics as a tool and their understanding of the importance of gender indicators and sex disaggregated data for a gender-sensitive development process

Danish-Jordanian partnership

The project is based on dialogue, exchange and cooperation between Jordanian and Danish institutions, private companies and civil society organizations. The project works through partnerships based on joint professional interests and knowledge, and a principal of equality between partners. Each partner benefits from the reflections, knowledge, and practices of the other. A key element in the project is to establish direct contact between different Jordanian and Danish organizations and companies around themes of common interest, in order for them to identify, plan and implement activities that will benefit both partners.
